We often hear of grandiose stories that borderline terrorism from specific populations that have links to their home country. Often times, these allegiances are extensions of religious interpretations but it may be conflicting ethnic differences or a number of any other reasons.

Less often discussed are the tensions between the English- and French-speaking populations in this country. As of 2001, when the last available data was produced, there were about 30 million people in Canada, and 5.2 million – or 18% of the population – spoke both languages.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 339px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBvhe6INZdlWOYO25esHvzD2KO0WO1xTDkYUpIvcTTpbkVn17koFDz8u1Iqi4_DsE_PLqXkq-HW0vNN_r_e_B4YL4aUu94QiJ_038ITxPdbCEvuctNykjJBpu8dE2mkn87_-r4gtDqp60/s400/QCTO.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498703408822505010" />
Paola and I have two very different stories. Her first language is Tagalog, mine is English. She is from the suburbs of Montréal, and I, from the suburbs of Toronto. Although we both speak English fluently, we also both speak French fluently and our conversations often switch seamlessly between the two languages. That’s not to say that we’re the perfect example of Canadian bilingualism but through our language connection, we have been able to share more than just words.

Without the ability to speak, our ability to communicate as human beings would be severely hindered and we wouldn’t be much more than upright animals who perform a series of grunts, moans, facial expressions and finger pointing to get what we desire.
Evidently, language is important, but why doesn’t everyone just learn the same language? Because a language is much more than words; Along with a language comes history, and with a history come culture and a way of life.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 349px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHmn50h8N-AuzS-76t0hOVZHQKSxr6BAgfQwbEeOkaZqY5F9sPfB-Cm0K6PEf8IhiL4K6j7zb5ScEHaxxDonozMcEV6BXFzia3mNIotHWThU23kjZsCaZRgCh5Is-flLAokwrsziqD9Js/s400/TFS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498703402024871906" />
This history – mainly the British expelling the French rulers and attempting to assimilate the French population – still lives within the bones of most young Quebecers today, even though la Conquête took place 250 years ago.
This past July 1st, we took a bunch of students to what was their first Canada Day fireworks celebration. To me, Quebec is just as much as a part of Canada as Ontario is so it was bizarre that they had never celebrated their country’s birthday before. For them, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day is their birthday.

One student asked me if Ontario has a holiday like the Saint-Jean and I told her we didn’t (I guess technically we do, but very few of us actually know what Simcoe Day is, besides a day off work). She seemed disappointed that we didn’t celebrate our provincial pride but to me it wasn’t a big deal. We celebrate Victoria Day – a holiday which no one from Quebec knew about, and to my surprise, our students from British Columbia from the Spring session were also unaware of – and Canada Day within 6 weeks of each other.

It’s about perspective I guess. If I were to erect a flagpole in front of my house, the red-and-white maple leaf would wave proudly in the wind, but I would be hard-pressed to find a Quebecer who would do the same. Theirs would be a blue-and-white fleur-de-lis and no one would question it.

So what does that say about the division of our country? Why is bilingualism important if people – both Francophones and Anglophones – seem unwilling and unmotivated to learn a second language?

If you’re one of those who are asking this, you’ve clearly never been to a Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day gathering or listen to the roars of the Bell Centre during a Montréal Canadiens game.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaPA1KEBaXSzB3mVesPTJnaGkT3sd2TrGnWMMdVChIiVhmeE-_3s5UnT7kjId_Er7Po4phyphenhypheneY6SjbgIkhuSx2M9KZycdCqoB9z43Y50AkP2XFIG8NN3A-Y6whmq3yc_hob4BVbnU3OrkM/s400/HabsvsLeafs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498703419898016242" />
But in all seriousness, the trends are changing. As I mentioned earlier, 5.2 million Canadians were bilingual in 2001, whereas five years earlier, that number was 4.8 million. Extrapolating the data we can guess that in the 10 years since the last data was available, the number of bilingual Canadians is probably in between 5.5-6 million, which would represent just fewer than 20% of the 33 million people in Canada.

While it is true that more Francophones are bilingual than Anglophones (43% of Francohpones are bilingual while 9% of Anglophones are bilingual), the importance of bilingualism is demonstrated clearly as new students wishing to join French Immersion programs in public schools across the GTA are regularly put on waiting lists. And for the record, about 55% of Anglophone parents believe it is important for their children to learn French (that number jumps to 97% concerning Francophone parents).
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 147px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisOGzzWzroNVeN1lqArl1zg1TPXCQCwv-aPNv5GBFfn-ZdVBbDpXX9NQXGbhVSLO0O1zCUuaEaBP6FVCDBVQRIR7OBDuW5SpeWZcvey8xQcFC9jf3ibGD3sowCvQ4P0M-L47y9z1jw5FM/s400/Bilingual+signs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498703425570899010" />
The Explore program is just the place for these desires to call home. Evidently, students come here for the opportunity to learn a new language but often there is also a little urging from their parents. When they leave, they have acquired new language skills, have gained knowledge of the other language’s people and culture and are doing their part to uphold Canada commitment to bilingualism.

Words by Jonathan Kates; photos by Paola Paulino
All data provided by the Census of Canada, 2001 and/or Environics, 2003.Paola & Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11687629218439521461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245487235167336981.post-55766931215012550112010-07-28T14:17:00.002-04:002010-07-28T14:23:37.129-04:00A Range of Cultures<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFNao6AMf6kv0JB8U8MJ85QWcElTt5Kjsp-wdGEAGmjuLM7SK9sez4c2i0AyKYzN0TtjEvHQMbnXLbHKWmK5jvHmR3sEjMhMCP_me0trQ2PHiOyuBtBGYZqX-YqWeWD7BnnynEWjLmvro/s400/Multi-Cultures!.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499024297503786498" />
Everybody knows that, multiculturalism is an integral part of Toronto’s charm and dynamism. «The most Multicultural City in the World» is precisely the name that the United Nations have given to the colourful city. And they are totally right about it. In fact, Statistics Canada related that 49.9% of Toronto’s population is foreign-born, which is more than Miami’s, Los Angeles’ and New York’s population, three other enormous ethnically diverse cities. More than 200 distinct foreign origins are located in Toronto, largely because it is the most popular Canadian destination for new immigrants: in 2006, 20% of them settled there. Chinese (11.4%), South Asian (12.0%), Black (8.4%) and Filipinos (4.1%) were at that time the main visible minorities. A lot of ethnic neighbourhoods although represent those ones and show how diversified the city. There is Chinatown, Greektown, Koreatown, Little Italy, Little India, Little Jamaica, Portugal Village...

Also, what makes Toronto a special city is its entertainment. All year long, it offers a full range of festivals all different from each other. This month, as an example, one of the most impressive festivals of all will take place downtown. Caribana, the one in question, is a celebration of the Caribbean culture that attracts more than 1 million tourists every year. There is also the Annual Festival of India, the Mabuhay Festival, the Irie Music Festival, the Annual Corso italia Toronto Fiesta and many others that appeal to people from around the world. These festivities give then the city of Toronto some visibility on the international scene, which is a big advantage.

Moreover, they make Canadians feel proud of their country. Recent researches revealed that inhabitants consider immigrants and demographic diversity an important part of their own Canadian identity. This support about multiculturalism has greatly increased over the last few years: in 1997, 74% of the Canadians were for it, against 85% in 2003 – which shows that a large part of the people is more and more open-minded. Plus, the fact that Canada defines itself as a multicultural nation means that immigrants are an integral part of the society. That gives them a strong feeling of belonging and leads them to identify with their host country as well. In other words, multiculturalism contributes to the immigrants and minorities integration and gives them the chance to be active in the society.

It is not all. The cultural diversity is also greatly beneficial to the city of Toronto and to the country in general. For example, it helps the economy of the place, largely because people who arrive are relatively young and can hold a job. In 2006, 22% of the immigrants were aged 15 to 24 and more than half were 25 and over, which means a lot of available young workers. Plus, a big part of them was already educated and qualified, and has brought a lot to their new town. They were – and still are – definitely useful and this, in every area of the society.

However, some people disagree with the benefits of multiculturalism. Most of them fear that it might endanger Canadian culture itself, whether the language or traditions, and are afraid that immigrants won’t make efforts to learn them. A study, rather encouraging, proclaims that only 5% of the population of Toronto has no knowledge of English or French, the two official languages in Canada, which is less than in the last decade. That also demonstrates the improvement of our system over the past years. Since its adoption in 1971 and after the promotion of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms by the Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau in 1982, multiculturalism has come a long way and has met several obstacles. And that is one of the main reasons why people are not totally for it: they think that it will fail, just like it failed elsewhere in the world, such as in Europe. Those failures actually created stereotypes and prejudices non-favourable to multiculturalism.

Anyhow, many evidences show that our system is not like the other ones, it is more successful than anywhere else in the world, according to some recent studies – all conducted between 2006 and 2008. Irene Bloemraad carried out one of these studies and compared immigrants’ attitude in the city of Toronto with those in Boston, USA. Some interesting differences emerged from it and among them, a more active participation in public life came from Canadian immigrants. According to the majority of people living there, Toronto is the greatest city in the world when we are talking about quality of life. It is also the economic, cultural and social heart of the country in spite of – or rather thanks to – its multicultural aspects and is ranked the «safest large metropolitan area in North America» by Places Rated Almanac even though. In brief, Toronto is not an ordinary city; multiculturalism makes it special and unique.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_k9mFyNhSDJSnbpShIoNcUfq1W3En4q6fjiROWoR_PDp-qNTZB0Ji8kBy5kOzExUM09HmtzHqeZpIimdmGkycxgWJFtgSQqnjWvuBaTcgBWzdb1u0NuiGv1wDIeC1tcBlEffP-RJLgSI/s400/HPIM3146.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499024321774044498" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq1FqikcMbuZ2wfmEvSqXgBmOe5Pr6O3-JmdS57-SBfrJe-y5ydezyPnw-iBsOjqD6-LKW9RQPz6pcBU7qwfvrfkAcvj8hxttPOoS_Uo3jrBx-x6Ixwl6PYMAjuMlfZCyT6ImoGIog77Q/s400/manoir+glendon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499024312806453618" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZZz_9pUR1okwXAEpOzKSDRbPDI2JOkfH6wkp_gKL4gEk_MdwqKk346tlcsXBWho0yv4zl9rPEYATf6ED4nSyjnwVQh-trHxq6iqib342FvPmwFx2Cw1hR-qfUs9vOVnp4hRRwap65BGQ/s400/A+lot+of+languages....jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499024310536928162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 244px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgti8C7uYdyfWNEnNhViC3g16W1YcKTGGaPqRFtiES3WPoAuHM4BQzzqczd35SeZOlhSbZNp4yrYqOYKHJZn1MPNcdTdd_GSaxsAtr9omUMRblXzKdWVdtqLHc-XE6rVbLC00fcKP43x4E/s400/Cultures....jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499024307334040482" />
Words by Nadia Houle-Khedher; photos by AngelinaPaola & Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11687629218439521461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245487235167336981.post-44443631707917273222010-07-28T12:38:00.001-04:002010-07-28T12:41:33.486-04:00Multiculturalism in Toronto<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxd5aZTpFIyg0ay4IaDvBPbCPOR-Dx2fmy_1e7KokJFurkFBjwScolTQ6146kG3sx5WXCurluL4jF6Kyswrey3bU2IbyyjZPdZVgIjL0n5eAV77P7K-Q7bmdXVairYRUqIkdqeX3wCszg/s400/workshop8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498996956524791538" />
In Toronto there are 2.503.281 people. they are from different countries, they have different religion, race, culture, costumes… That is a wonderful thing, that mean s that Toronto has became a modern city. The city has a lot to offer with all its tourist attractions. But with over 2.5 million residents, even if Toronto is considered as green, it is hard to keep it clean and hide the pollution effects. This is why several programs have been established to reduce the Torontonians effects on the environment and to make become Toronto a greener city.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUq2gqTOr8dSMSALMQ5vPw5oGnQPbMT32wDMroG37T2zOJqXYO4G9_-I7_tl7Ss2BsCEQSlbxwBr8icJeu2w8YSZRvlmHpzM-_7DFXVR2JhDD_XOEeZA9rVfAiMROdacbRbL-ScT2XRtc/s400/livegreen1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498995449136348498" />
The first step to a better world is greening buildings. Indeed, the city introduced the Energy Retrofit Program (ERP) in order to reduce energy used in city-owned buildings by 15 percent. Since 2004, the ERP has updated more than 200 of the city owned buildings such as community centers, police and fire stations, arenas and Exhibition Place building. Solar walls were also installed in many buildings to assist in heating them.
About vehicles, through a partnership with the Federal Government and Fiba Canning Inc. the city plans to develop a hydraulic hybrid garbage packer that will run on 100 percent biodiesel. Emission reductions will occur through the fuel efficiency from the hybrid system and through using biodiesel. We have to learn to respect other cultures and integrate these people to our society. Unfortunately, these differences can cause conflict among us, since what is different sometimes scare other people. Fortunately, in general, Canada’s government and people are usually very comprehensive and welcoming. As I said before, it can be difficult to share our land with people who have different beliefs and culture, but it also creates a mesh in between the population. Some think we are too accommodant, other think we are not enough. Where is the line we most not cross? When will it be too late? This polemic took place in a wealthy neighborhood in Montreal named Outremont. This neighborhood is mostly inhabited by Jewish orthodox people who did not like to see women, lightly dress, training, at the local YMCA. When the community asked for clouded windows, many people who were not involved in this conflict before stood up and claimed that it was outrageous. What about voting? It is also our right to express our political opinion in a democratic country, but must the rules change because someone has a different culture? How do we establish equality when we are all different? A woman wearing the Burqa or the Nikab has the right to vote without showing her face since 2007. Should it be acceptable in our society that we call a democracy and where everyone is treated equally? Other stories like that happened too. A man had been forced to go out off the pool to let some islamist extremists swim, a paramedic had to go out of an ambulance because he was eating a pork sandwich and at the HEC a corridor was blocked because people were praying during the rush hour. The more we will give the more they will take. We all make an effort to make these people a part of what Canada is, but they have to be indulgent too and respect this cultural cohabitation.

Religion is between you and God. Religion is something that concerns ourselves and ourselves only and should never imply somebody from the exterior and surely not someone who does not even practice this same religion. Indeed, recently, people practicing the Sikhism religion asked permission to wear the Kirpan, a religious symbol, in public schools. The Kirpan is as small knife worn at the waist by Sikh boys. Is it normal to authorize young boys to wear a weapon on them? Furthermore, how can Canada be a lay society if there is still catholic sign in parliament? Look at their faces, tails, bodies and, most importantly, their eyes, if you pay attention persons are more likely to categorize the animals "things” than a living being. No, you can't and neither can I, but we can do our best to decrease the number of abandoned, neglected and killed pets. How can we transform those words into actions? Easy, you should stop buying animals sold for the pet-shop trade. Regarding to PETA, there is millions of unwanted dogs and cats who die every year in animal shelters. The best way to find a life companion within the canine kind is to go by yourself in a dog breeding. Then, you should avoid giving pets as a gift even if it is a fish, it still needs weekly cares and instead it would receive a lifetime of suffering, unloved and unwanted. If you give pets to children, you ought to those animals to supervised there treatments. Also, many people developed a passion regarding to “exotic” animals and as the PETA organism says: You'd Be Psychotic to Get An “Exotic”. It is really harmful for those animals said the organism: "Every year, many people purchase “exotic” animals, like hedgehogs, macaws, monkeys (even tigers and bears) from pet shops or auctions to keep as “pets.” But life in captivity is a death sentence for countless “exotic” animals who suffer from malnutrition, improper care and environment, loneliness, and the stress of confinement”.

To conclude, you should be careful! It is a good example that we are constantly showing to the rest of the world. We are able to do what a lot of other countries can't do: living peacefully with different people who have different cultures. There would probably be less war in the world if everybody was like that. We are very open-minded and it is like that, that we learn new things from the others. It is our differences who make us strong and proud of our nation. Of course, it would be utopic to say that everything is perfect in Canada. Sometimes, exaggeration can create problem in our society.

People from the province of Quebec will certainly remember the ‘reasonable limits’ and the Bouchard-Taylor Commission. Few years ago, it was and it is still creating controversy. It seems to be impossible to have everybody agreeing on the same thing concerning some cultural differences. Should we have the right to carry a knife called kirpan in school for religious purposes? After all, a knife is a weapon and if it is use inappropriately it can be very dangerous. It is also a religious symbol and everybody have the right to practice their own religion. It’s a fundamental right. This is an example that brought controversy in Quebec. It seems that we do not know how to deal with these differences. It is a nice thing to be very open-minded, to know other people, to learn and share new things, but there ought to be a limit. Foreigners shall respect that Canada also has its own culture and that it might be different from their country. We cannot impose our culture to the others and it is not because you are from another country that everybody else has to live like in your previous country. At home, you are free to do what you want, to live the way you want, but you cannot impose your way of living to everybody. It’s very difficulty to determine a limit between what we should have to right to do and what we shouldn't. Since immigration is more and more important, these situations are uneasy to deal with. It’s a question of cultural identity. We have to realise that there are no cultures that are more important than the others.

Differences can bring us a lot: cultural enrichment as well as problems. Their really unique style and good mix of colors make them attractive enough for some to worth affording the high price that comes with them, although it’s not the opinion of the major part of the Torontonian consumers, and that has become a big problem for the shops that sell those kind of shoes since the recent recession.

A lot of factors come into consideration when a consumer has to decide whether he is willing to buy a pair of shoes in a high-end sneaker Shop, or not. The first one is, obviously, the price of this kind of shoes. Is a consumer ready to buy an expensive pair of sneakers that he will most likely wear once every 3 weeks because he will simply not be willing to wear them on every occasion? This is even truer nowadays: “In this economy, young adults who are becoming increasingly more financially conscious, aren't going to drop big dollars for something that they can't utilize often. We see a huge increase in $60 Vans and Chuck Taylor's because they're simple, straight forward, convenient for every occasion and look good.” In those sentences, blogger writing under the name of Blash resumes the real situation of today. Within the last few years, high-end sneaker-only shops such as Cartel and Stolen Riches closed for good because their attendance, which didn’t want to pay highly-priced shoes anymore, just disappeared as the recession was still going on. Furthermore, other shops selling a good variety of shoes (fancy, casual, simple) such as Get Outside, which is selling Vans and Chuck Taylor’s shoes as well, are still going well on the shoes market of Toronto.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 226px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKQKZM68wrS2JL6oIKODyx0_8oJ5XVkXhfkgi9g8OT674PpcoU0L2WFE2kahJiDoMF1HisQKgoiiopr0RDjel1Bi_Qns0eC_7hAvn5YwfbBJyPPDoVGv_XXlwlbViXVWhyphenhyphenkuVWrhmycjk/s400/get_outside_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498340170737494722" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFBmXFMb3MH7lInGNQANRPnJNLT6UcdFZa3qSvw4ByZm7TWxJfyXCEF52HkyLg2k3cZUsJ0K-09nSED80K9BCwUTJkPQUefcFrxlKF0mzVMGjCPcRemvoujBra2f9iBlYpGlCuKSlkXEk/s400/get_outside_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498340159094569106" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju6fNDzfjNHOMfP3oXiZtvIqs_UULz6uPnylRcPTdoukqYIgsazKWpV4gCX-9ht5LPtIXl9Mu8Wh5brvXYXrbuGCnL7jAxFCel86zbsc_VWaMxLLwsEWypeH5YbkIagEDG7QU3qFzRieY/s400/get_outside_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498340154220974402" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_poSzp5QWWwycbsxzkYKgppURMrkYC55C8Tp6rU6lt9mA7cXSqh0K1NwgXOzy8Q4MAJ3QLDUYh2PjXkNY-J5hnVLvSnjkDCURR8ZYXgMBf0G0KMxBxmPqg5LtgrduiwWfnnCtRQiwM8s/s400/shoes+.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498340147398516146" />
The second factor comes into mind of the consumer as he’s staring at the price written aside the high-end sneakers: “Can I have the same shoes for less and maybe more choice of colors and style on the manufacturer website?” In fact, the manufacturer has almost always more to offer on his website than a high-end shoes shop could ever do in store. The skateboard shop So Hip It Hurts is currently doing that perfectly. Climbing up the stairs, entering the shop we can see a whole wall covered by Supra shoes (high-end sneakers), and going deeper in the shop we can also see skateboarding-style clothes such as t-shirts, jeans, sweaters of brands like Element, Quick Silver, Hurley, O’neil, etc.This assures the store to sell enough stuff to even make profits, and that’s how they will be able to stay alive, as a high-end sneaker shop, for a longer time. Now, we have to hope that many more shops of this kind are going to follow the same path that So Hip It Hurts has taken.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 272px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYVT0E09p0LtgyJSdaYBnKTcxRN8MuGH6PN25wM1GfgHkcIul99yYE3J1WH8rCqbFybnSdXnzS1A0s3H60Do428vV_HfvKfLW6ZIVr9FLy3u_jevrASrq7mw201cUpthgEadhZ1j45EOY/s400/so+hip+it+hurts.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498339654863753010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9nQsQh7ddzGbNKxkjh7tniTnjAbRDSSQniuB5vMwWaxOcF1Ll8qIZo2vACVW7fO-SAaO_O8U1D86pgSJqRM5PYL8ZISv4s6qQwGZxjSt7Hgi39h8dOI6pClAPhsG5_E9uSdOhECoCWJc/s400/so+hip+it+hurts+post.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498339657987590066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDM6CYEH5F0V1tce0Z-qaXF8prEaq59RwH8RK9Lc5XiNLzFRrq3VsTYS02tramRIkNX13YdS1Aw0JJ1g4UMXUMREcQIgnM9gYIO9A_6qc0CcMR1QMiT9i8b1lHE608cZEPuzJ7PlZm5UA/s400/shoesss.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498339666939730914" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 167px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRWB48BwX2wvGNKC0ghgKvJGWTSKB4r2t1QD3q2JR17zb6JUA0QEcemTGBHDI4Zy0CfttWoWSQlmZ4wL98z5-WMXJi1rGRSuvt20p0gki5QFbBrL22YTuPUz7LrznZLZ8hHoV4f3HIrsc/s400/picture+.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498339669278629154" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4SBOZyZlWQhQdd019W5schOOiVLiAZXeWh12Q9L4rmd3B5te91eIb1-cyi956ptBNyr1m-34peCzlyzL2XqWjMd8AvKFPXjKJmk9P2q5_zQGcWDA6Ll5CRacNthDkdDAd_TnJWWKmXzU/s400/......jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498339673753274050" />
Words by Guillaume Dubé; photos by Audrey DostiePaola & Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11687629218439521461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245487235167336981.post-32656428726253325402010-07-28T00:07:00.002-04:002010-07-28T12:24:30.517-04:00Tourism in Toronto<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZihY9-TJdy5OB0yKMGd4uh8vOvD2BWp3VMSiKKi43JYGhhBY80rm_PIOW6EmmA8OhZjGTnHFs5_zSR7JCr74p-qRA2QV3H4pW_ol0RBat1KH3ClCDWtqv0mhnw6scZMvYSr67N11C7Hs/s400/downtown.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498342909479990546" />
Toronto is the capital of Ontario, with a population of 2.503.281 inhabitants, is the biggest city of Canada. The Yoga is an activity that you have to do positions and it always finishes by a quiet meditation. The length of Yoga is between 60 to 90 minutes and the goal of this is to be relaxed and have more concentration. During all the positions, you have to be concentrated and you have to breathe when the yoga teacher tells you. The breathing is important. You have to do it at the good time if you want to have the best benefits. The meditation in yoga helps to calm your body and spirit and you’re supposed to do that at the end of the activity. There are more than 100 positions in yoga but you’re not obligated to do all of them.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg53g4Xy9cq5VXS2ExaTE_bKtNr227mQArviINKfDnUv3PNxA0dOG_1hOunWZyCDo9YY7iK0-M2fohGXzZNwBwkbVIdg0A_2kErgXnMO8Vpln14DoEeW8mr5UvOElpv1aGwkmBCcSHo-c/s400/yoga2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498336998497941474" />
The yoga is for all and most of people do that to lower the level of stress or anxiety. But there are also others benefices like it contributes to the asthma treatment, it improves the cardiovascular health, it helps the people who have cancer, it contributes in the treatment of drug addiction, it improves the cardiorespiratory capacity, it contributes to the depression treatment, etc. All of these benefits have been studied with a big control and only professionals did the researches because sometime, the health of the person can be in case like for the study on epileptic’s people. If we take this study, we can see that with the yoga, the frequency of the crises decrease. The sociologist Marie-Josée Croteau affirms that the yoga can be dangerous for the people. During an interview in a scientific magazine, she told us that the bad effects can be psychological as physical. The Mrs. Croteau’s studies affirm that for some adepts of yoga, they develop psychological symptoms like hearing and visual hallucinations, paranoia, excitement and aggressiveness. Also there’s some case of temporary or permanent depersonalization. For the physical part, it’s only if the person doesn’t do stretching before doing yoga. So the symptoms can be a tearing of cartilages, a muscular strain or sprains and pains in the neck and in the back.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRpzK3MIAJcGkWvM6Jyuju6YUVDZCZF92LVQSKhKhwspKuTFS74llTegtgyD4XlA-vwv5i5UMx1yKP8D9LashAOIrzAOuSBY4FqL4Q9Rq_keVbodVU-8V3YPKXOShEoxR1PnUrfKj0Xoc/s400/yoga4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498336968123212562" />
To be safe, the person has to do some stretching before each period of yoga. Like that, the physical symptom can be eliminated. It a good way to improve your health and to low the psychological symptoms like stress, anxiety and depression. There are more good things than bad things so why not continue with this practice? Most of the doctors tell their patients to do yoga when it can be positive for their health. By expanding their inventions, citizens are bombarded with many new products and they do not recognize the good things. One of the most basic but important product that we use everyday is the coffee. Does it belong among our friends or enemies? Throughout the past years, numerous researches have been uploaded with new information about this product. Coffee is actually a great item for consumption when it is used in consideration and not in excessive amounts.

Even though the coffee is becoming a controversial subject because of the caffeine it contains, many companies have found their success by selling all types of coffee. By naming a few in the international scape, there is Second Cup, Juan Vandez Coffee, Tim Horton’s and especially Starbucks.

What is Starbucks? When did the story from Starbucks begin? Almost everyone tasted once in their life the famous cups of coffee from Starbucks. Today, it is rated as one of the most famous cups all around the world. This company opened its doors in 1971 in Seattle's Pike Place Market, Washington in the United States. However, the Director of Retail Operations and Marketing of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, got inspired from espresso bars in Milan and therefore, the style of the coffee shop changed. Then, in 1996, Starbucks opened its first store over the ocean outside of North America, in Japan. Some years ago, in 1999, this growing coffee shop became partner with the Conservation International to progress its business by using environmentally-friendly methods to collect the coffee. In addition, last year in 2009, Starbucks was upgraded to be the world’s largest buyer of Fair Trade Certified(tm)

This was a quick overview of the history of Starbucks and this explains why today, there are 15 000 stores in 50 countries all over the world and it is rated as the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee.

Starbucks is one of the most popular gathering places because of its inviting atmosphere for people can buy many types of coffee and also pastries. However, even if this company is selling many various products, the main one is coffee.

Nevertheless, is coffee good for our health or should we avoid this controversial product? Researches at Harvard on over 120 000 people indicates that drinking one or three cups of caffeinated coffee each day may decrease the risk of many disease like diabetes, Parkinson's (80%), liver cirrhosis (80%), colon cancer (25%), gallstones (50%), Alzheimer's, kidney stones and it can also fight against asthma symptoms. Moreover, a recent study revealed that caffeine by being a great stimulant is promoting attention, wakefulness and mental perform.

However, there is also a negative side on the consummation of coffee. For instance, consumers who are drinking caffeinated coffee on a regular basis are vulnerable for heart disease because of the cholesterol-raising effect. In addition, there are some affects on the blood pressure, the heart rhythm which can become irregular or rapid and so on. All of these impacts can decrease the quality of sleep, dehydration and dependence. Yes, it might be surprising to see that coffee can be a cause of dependence but even though The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that coffee is a safe product, caffeine is still recognized as a drug. The principal role of caffeine is to stimulate the nervous system and therefore, people can become dependant on the effect of caffeine. However, most people are not addicted to caffeine; therefore it is not a danger for everyone. This is why the Canadian government indicates that the healthiest method to drink coffee is to take only 450 milligrams of caffeine a day.

Over the past twenty years, more than 1900 studies discovered and examined the benefits and the negative effects of coffee, and overall the results are mostly positive.

"By and large, the studies show that coffee is far more beneficial than it is harmful," indicates Tomas DePaulis, PhD, researcher at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which has its own studies of coffee studies all around the globe.

To conclude this debate about the truth of coffee, researches assured the consumers that coffee is a good thing because it can, at varied rates, reduce the risk of developing several diseases. In fact, people who are using this product everyday are more protected than those who don't drink it at all. This is why coffee can be placed among our friends for its advantages and it is highly recommended to drink coffee from Starbucks because it has the best flavored cups.

Cheers!

Words by Ioana Capilnean; photos by Myriam BourdonPaola & Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11687629218439521461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245487235167336981.post-24036164888807949162010-07-28T00:04:00.000-04:002010-07-28T00:04:00.108-04:00Fashion Pressure
Advertisements, models, video clips, super star, clothes, fashion, makeup, magazines, internet, these are all pressures that little girls, teenagers and women have to live with every day. It's very difficult to countermand such tidal trends. Yes, we can turn off T.V., but to me, that's simply running away from a very difficult situation, rather than hitting it head on. We as a society need to examine our own shallow value system that places the acquisition of "things" over humanity.” said Candida Eittreim, an author that published The Waterbug, Internet Safety, Beginning Gardening Online Educator-Suite101 University since 2002, in one of her articles The Hypersexualisation of America, in 2005. This is not a new problem; girls really think that they have to look like a model to be appreciated by boys. Theses fixations can bring health problems. Girls will try to lose weight like their favourite super star. They see that everywhere in the magazines and on Internet. This situation can go too far; anorexia and bulimia. Have you ever seen a model in a fashion show? According to Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, without treatment, up to 20% of people with serious eating disorders die. We have to encourage projects like Dove. Have you ever seen “Dove evolution” on YouTube? Or project like Pro-Ana which refers to the promotion of anorexia nervosa as a lifestyle choice rather than an eating disorder. We must stop placing such stress on body image and start emphasing character traits like integrity and honesty. In our society, look became so much important that it seems like it’s all that matters. According to a research, the physical appearance is more important in urban zones, in which associating with good-looking people is a social choice. In this era of beauty and superficiality, appearance keeps growing in people's mind and getting worse. And that desire to be on top, people keeps considerate it as a need, has the only result to help companies become richer.

In our society of consumption, it’s hard to live without the media’s harassment. In magazines, they tell women what to buy to be as sexy as their favorite stars. On TV, they tell men what to have in their yard to be cooler than their neighbors. At school, kids are always under pressure when they see other children with brand clothes. All those little things made us believe that a good look can make our life happier and more successful. But we can't put the blame on anyone else than ourselves. If our mentality has become like that, it's because we wanted it that way. As the years had passed, the importance that we put in look grew in our mind and companies took advantage of it. The women wanted a «younger-looking» skin? L’Oreal created a new cream anti-age. More abs? Here comes the Ab King Pro! So, we put pressure on our shoulders by ourselves.

Nevertheless, I have to admit that in almost everything, the first impression that we make on people is important. In fact, when we meet someone for the first time, the first information that we perceive of that person is his physical appearance. Even before we meet him or her, just from a glance, we evaluate the kind of person we’ll have to deal with. We can guess his/her social environment, personality, qualities and defaults. So, for example, to get a job, it’s crucial to make a good impression on the employer. And the first thing that comes in mind when we want to make a good impression is to have a stunning look. With that obsession of looking good, we got ourselves into a vicious circle.

Finally, if we think about materials, are we better in this domain? That is why this article will speak about this organization, as an example of large scale public transportation system that, at my opinion, works well, by being very efficient and cost-effective.
The TTC was created in 1921 by the municipality of Toronto. It began by owning streetcars from the private companies that were operating them before and they opened their first subway line in 1954. A few buses were in the network at the beginning, but they took a lot more importance during the sixties and later. In 2008, the average daily ridership of this system was 2.5 million; 1,254,600 by bus, 910,300 by subway, 285,600 by streetcar and 37,800 by intermediate rail.

In my opinion, as for a majority of observers, the TTC have a lot of qualities that makes it one of the best public transportation systems of America, by being efficient and cost effective for the consumer and by being still ameliorating the service. Its efforts for the environment are also praiseworthy.

First, for the citizens of Toronto, the public transportation of their city is particularly useful, because of its effectiveness and that, for a price very reasonable. Indeed, instead of the fact that it costs three dollars a trip if you do not have tokens, the normal user can buy them for only two dollars and a half and the student/senior for 1.65$. So globally, the cost for the users is similar to the one of other cities like Montreal or Quebec that always turns around more or less two dollars. However, these fares are really not high, considering the unique service offered. In fact, with very short delays, very well maintained facilities, a lot of spaces and exceptionally simple indications, the TTC users really do not have nothing to envy to the citizens of other cities.

Second, the service offered by the TTC, already exceptional, is still ameliorating, by owning more and better streetcars and bus in the next years. For example, the next streetcars will have very low floors and, like the buses, will have better indications.
The TTC also makes many efforts for the environment by encouraging the people to use low-carbon intensive transportation modes and by trying to reduce its own emissions. For example, in 2008, one third of its fleet was hybrid and it plan to operate exclusively hybrid/diesel car in a near future.

Finally I think that the TTC is a very mature organization that shows us how the public transportation can be cheap and comfortable, as an alternative to the individual cars that are expansive, that congest the cities and that are really not environment friendly.
Words by Albert Michaud-Gagnon; pictures by Chloe OuelletPaola & Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11687629218439521461noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245487235167336981.post-6309665321353331372010-07-28T00:01:00.004-04:002010-07-28T14:16:09.069-04:00Toronto and Immigration<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaF05SBbV6beJemo5LP5S0aFhOpsQjqUAlH37U2ogeMi70j41dbkiiu7W3dPjJQSKTWCMaQCHTkkpDNxIsAcdGBz0PnxYwnUHFnyDITj-CfquP0CdXSEYOkxKjG66CDqmlvVsru5KHsH0/s400/100_2522.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499022161416827394" />
Immigration is defined as the movements of the population to other countries; in this case y will talk about the massive Toronto immigration during the last fifty years due to politic causes or as a result of the studies of the immigrant population.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPWJV9dISlvgdZ1k5Soys0TB1xZFSsP7yr9RQXd2a42lOrOam7AR0TfosB1_YuAr3OaY-sgIVgYZvPcSaKEhdW2i5oB_CfWfWnvG-SKO3TLgpqWIkG2WkgKVZZVWHvyiPiVyq4sOjV-wk/s400/100_2537.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499022157355168610" />
By any measure Toronto is an incredibly multicultural city. A snapshot of Toronto as it enters the millennium would reveal a sprawling urban complex of approximately 4 million people. It is one of the world’s major immigration-receiving areas. According to the 1996 Canadian census, while just over 17 percent of all Canadians were born outside of Canada, that figure rises to an unprecedented 42 percent of those in Toronto who were born outside Canada. Factually three-quarters of all household heads in Toronto were either born outside of Canada or have at least one parent who was. And that inflow of immigration has come from every corner of the globe.

Toronto have always welcomed the immigrants, they suppose a reactivation on the economy of the city ,but in the most precarious times they had to carry out the hardest jobs, nevertheless with time the integration of the immigrations became much more completed without any kind of social tension.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 323px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXIlExYZ20iSc2vN-i3uWd7vtnehhRpUmblG_hD0dVku3sTyIj4XLCubwzBQf27jdIlQGFGmuNz55pppNzC7y0qubqLuY2AAJ6LRaHv3L2Dhb81fbekiOREiEbY6gay1sZtxshsTlMjTo/s400/100_2538.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499022152172251826" />
During the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century, the Irish immigrants who had followed the British to Toronto were followed by many other immigrant groups in the late nineteenth century: Germans, Italians, and Jews from various parts of Eastern Europe; later Chinese, Russians, Poles, and many other eastern Europeans. By the latter half of the 20th century, refugees and immigrants from many other parts of the world were the major source of immigration.

The causes of this immigrations depends on the political status of the immigrant`s country, for example many Italians immigrate because of the dictadure of Benito Mussolini and many Germans will have immigrated because of the pressure practice by the Hitler and the Gestapo, the same happens with the Jews and other immigrants.
The core advantage is an increase on the number of workers increasing the production and also there is a secondary advantage, a multicultural society which is very attractive for the tourist.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFByFD0WHbis7L8bbas0MbgxawJm5RcKRXPknWIpcQL08ToP62-zHQlIsS9NP6Bflp4dDcnscmuT9OwCjugU5-GOphmr9Xy3S-IlOrpo-n-ZUMXZ6XV29rxosIc4brSI0JJRvzvDQdn00/s400/100_2540.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499022148780383826" />
On the other hand we have the negative part this, sometimes their rules and they culture impact with the way of living of Toronto leading to a social tension, moreover they can be not consider at first as a part of the nation but as intruders that compete against the natives for jobs.

Closer to the city core, there have been confrontations and even shootings involving police and youth, particularly Black youth and so-called Asian youth gangs, this is an example of ethnical confrontation, this is an example of the result of the impact between two cultures in the same society.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 254px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEdUS1LP2mSofcFML8Cx7uwTwkQc7FU0_5qYWi7oU0dXexRrxWe8tqpZCxYjcfQ69F0Zw5gtJZNiGVLq1VmB1ExqhMNXb8ZmH3EiMUPaAhPLBqHm01x_Ztk6TIF5m-rDoT38vcwFhPyyw/s400/Sans+titrejdfngljrenh.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499022143846329586" />
Although Toronto has millions of immigrants, experts point out that the city can afford even more immigrant population.
